Recreational Gymnastics

Toddler Gymnastics
Many gymnastics clubs begin their Toddler Gymnastics Programs around 18-Months old. Toddler Gymnastics classes are designed to increase basic motor skills, introduce very basic gymnastics fundamentals, and bring children into a class-type setting (often times with their parents or guardians). The classes are typically short and the learning is centered around fun, safe, and organized activities.

Preschool Gymnastics
Preschool Gymnastics Programs typically include children between ages three and five (sometimes six). Many times by age three the kids are ready to be in a class without the direct supervision of their parent or guardian. Instructors are still responsible for fine-tuning those basic motor skills and basic fundamentals. Classes increase slightly in length typically, but are still centered around activities. Preschool age children are often able to follow a simple two or three part circuit on their own immediately after their turn with the instructor.

School-Age Gymnastics
School-age gymnasts range in age from six to twelve years old. They are often separated into boys and girls, as well as by skill level. Each gym categorizes their "levels" differently. According to USA Gymnastics, however, Recreational Gymnasts are between Level 1 and Level 3. An instructor is responsible for teaching fundamentals (especially if the child has not been in Preschool Gymnastics), fine-tuning those fundamentals, and teaching the appropriate skills, strength, and flexibility for the level of class. The job of an instructor in a recreational school-age program is also to ensure that each child is learning and developing in a safe, fun environment that nutures their self esteem.

Teen Gymnastics
After a child reaches the age of twelve, often times they become self conscious about their age, ability and size. It is at this point that some clubs decide to create a class designed specifically for the "older" recreational gymnast. The idea and responsibilities of an instructor in a Teen Gymnastics Program are identical to those in a School-Aged Program. Self-esteem becomes even more important as a child becomes a teen.

Adult Gymnastics
There are adults who decide that they would like to increase flexibility and strength and would like to learn some gymnastics in the process. These classes are usually structured specifically for each participant and their previous experience with the sport!
